Sanding
(Surgical Dermabrasion) (no incision)

Description
Sanding or Dermabrasion is most frequently used to remove irregularities in the skin surface such as sharp scar edges caused by acne or chicken pox. This procedure is also used to improve superficial skin discolorations. Sanding may be performed in place of the Face Peel when wrinkling is more severe over the upper lip and forehead.

Procedure
Dermabrasion is performed with a small rotating wire brush or diamond wheel to plane down (sand) the area of elevation or discoloration. This does not change any underlying scar tissue; it merely improves the appearance of the skin by making the total surface more uniform and smooth.

Considerations
The risks involved in the dermabrasion procedure are similar to those for the Face Peel procedure (see previous page). It is important to note that exposure to direct sunlight following treatment may result in unfavorable discoloration.
