Nasal Surgery
(Rhinoplasty) (no visible incision)

Description
Corrective nasal surgery or Rhinoplasty is performed with no visible scar at all. This procedure is functionally limited by the underlying framework, therefore nasal passages cannot be narrowed past a certain point. A delicate balance is achieved between the framework, permitting normal breathing capacity, and the overall structure of other facial features.

Procedure
The goal in Rhinoplasty is to remove major bone deviations or deformities while refining the cartilage and soft tissue contour. In planning the surgical procedure, computer imaging is employed for careful study, determining various degrees of possible change, and defining the relationship of the nose to other facial features. The images are used as a blueprint for surgery.

Changes in the nasal contour are made by removing, shifting or altering the underlying bone and cartilage structures. The skin is then molded or draped over this new foundation to achieve the desired result. Under ordinary circumstances, this procedure is performed from the inside of the nose, leaving no external scars. Special circumstances may require external incisions at the base of the nose near the nostril folds which heal well and are difficult to detect.

Surgical packing is usually placed in the nose and left for one or two days. This packing can usually be removed the morning after surgery, by the patient at home. There is always some blood stained mucus behind the packing.

A small splint is securely taped over the outside of the nose to maintain proper position and to limit nasal swelling. This also protects the nose from injury during the healing process.

Recovery
Varying degrees of swelling and discoloration around the eyes are evident within the first twenty-four hours, and will diminish within the first week. Apparent nasal swelling will take ten to fourteen days to disappear.

The final contour changes (shrinking and softening) may take six to nine months. Some numbness and limited swelling in the nasal tip area will normally persist during this time, depending on the exact nature of the surgical procedure.

Postoperative nasal bleeding can occur but is very rare and is usually easy to manage. Slight oozing may also occur when packing is removed. The most common postoperative complaint concerns the slight discomfort caused by the packing. Postoperative infection is only a remote possibility.

Minor irregularities of contour are common after surgery, most of which improve during the first three to twelve weeks. These irregularities are usually so minor, they are noticed only by the patient, not by others. In a few of the cases, despite every precaution, asymmetry or contour irregularities may require a revision.
