Face Lift

Description
Face-lift or Rhytidectomy refers to a variety of procedures that involve raising the facial skin to eliminate hanging folds or lines. This ordinarily includes the skin of the neck, the region under the chin, the cheeks, jowls and the temporal regions. The forehead, eyebrows and eyelids can also be included or they may be lifted as separate procedures.

Basic surgical procedures are designed to lift, stretch and remove sagging skin while supporting the facial musculature and replacing youthful contour. The specific needs of each patient are analyzed on an individual basis by video imaging, therefore, the procedure is customized to your particular needs. Variations include:

  • the direction of skin incisions, depending on the amount of skin removed
  • the direction of stretching, depending on the amount of skin removed
  • the amount of skin removed, depending on the degree of deformity
  • the placement of the incisions, depending on hair and/or beard line
  • additional work under the chin, depending on the amount of fatty tissue and "turkey wattle" folds.

The amount of surgery necessary to achieve the desired result also varies per individual. For example, a central face-lift improves the area between the chin and the top of the cheek-bones. A face-neck lift includes the neck with the cheeks and jowls. A complete face-lift rejuvenates everything from the Adam's apple to the hairline. Eyelids are usually done at the same time if needed. A forehead lift alone achieves more stunning rejuvenation per dollar than any other lift and leaves no visible scar.

Procedure
Incisions are hidden in front of and behind the ear. The facial skin is elevated backward and upward. Excess fat is actually sculptured and loose or sagging muscles are tightened. The excess skin is removed, and the edges are sutured with a hidden dissolving suture that doesn't have to be removed and leaves no suture marks.

Dr. Foster is a fastidious plastic surgeon who takes the extra time to use a buried dissolvable suture to ensure that he leaves no stitch marks.

Turkey Wattle Excision
This is a clever short-cut procedure pioneered by Dr. Foster to eliminate the prominent fat-filled folds under the chin in older patient that don't need or don't want a face/neck lift. It takes less than an hour and costs about half of a face/neck lift.

Facial Implants
Faces lose volume as they age. That's part of the reason the skin sags. Filling procedures restore youthful contours with or without skin tightening. Most leave no visible scar what-so-ever. Cheek implants are done through the inside of the lower lid or the mouth; chin implants through the inside of the lower lip; lip implants through the inside of the corners of the mouth; jaw angle implants through the mouth and forehead implants through the scalp.

Recovery
In the early postoperative period, it is normal to experience numbness and tension in the neck, the cheek areas and around the ear. This is caused by the separation of tiny nerve fibers in the skin and will normally disappear in the first ten to fourteen days, leaving no ill effects. Patients may notice a lag in the normal motion of the facial muscles due to the initial swelling; however, this is temporary. Temporary swelling of the eyes is also common shortly after the face-lift operation.

Even in the most successful procedures, there may be a little blood collection under the skin which is treated during the follow-up office examination. This will not affect the overall results of the operation.
