Eyelid Surgery
(Blepharoplasty) (no visible incision)

Description
Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty is performed to correct a variety of changes in the facial skin and tissues around the eye and brow. These changes may be due to the aging process, genetic traits, and frequent swelling of the eyelids due to allergies or related problems. The most common changes include overhanging skin folds and bagginess under the eyes. In the absence of loose skin, lower lid bags can be removed with no visible scar at all, or slight skin excess can be tightened with the laser.

Procedure
Wrinkling and sagging of the eyelid skin requires removal of the excess in all directions. Surgical incisions are strategically placed to fade in with normal facial lines. Excess skin, overstretched muscle fibers, and protruding fatty tissue are removed from the upper and lower lid area. Particular attention is directed to the tension placed on the lid margin.

A Brow Lift or Forehead Lift, elevating the eyebrow to alleviate fullness of the upper lid, may be accomplished surgically with a separate incision.

Considerations
Temporary downward displacement of the lower eyelid as a result of the weight of the water swelling at the lash margin is a possibility; however, early and frequent exercises (repeated tight closure of eyelids) can remedy this difficulty.

Where the soft tissue shows absence of muscular tone, lower eyelid sag may be significant enough to warrant secondary corrections despite careful surgical technique.

Additional risks involve unfavorable healing. This includes excess scar tissue, surgical wound infection or prolonged postoperative swelling and discoloration. Other postoperative problems are no more frequent than in other types of surgical treatment.
