Ear Correction (Otoplasty) (minimal incision)
![]() ![]() Description The size, shape and position of the ears can be surgically corrected. Basic objectives are to reduce protrusion while providing a normal configuration when viewed from the side. Since a child's ears are close to adult size at age four to six, surgical corrections are quite effective at this age. It should be noted that both ears are never exactly alike and that perfect symmetry is not a reasonable expectation.
Procedure The skin is raised and partially separated from the cartilage. After correction of position and contour, the skin is replaced and secured by surgical sutures. The new cartilage contours are supported with soft cotton padding. Application of a total turban-type head dressing for five to seven days is necessary to protect both ears, minimize swelling, and limit discomfort. This allows the patient to turn from side to side without undue pressure while sleeping.
Recovery This procedure has no adverse effects on the hearing mechanism or the inner ear structures.
