Ear Correction
(Otoplasty) (minimal incision)

Description
The size, shape and position of the ears can be surgically corrected. Basic objectives are to reduce protrusion while providing a normal configuration when viewed from the side. Since a child's ears are close to adult size at age four to six, surgical corrections are quite effective at this age.

It should be noted that both ears are never exactly alike and that perfect symmetry is not a reasonable expectation.

Procedure
Incisions are normally placed behind the ear where any remaining surface scars will not be visible. Occasionally, external incisions are required; however, these are inconspicuously placed within the normal folds of the ear.

The skin is raised and partially separated from the cartilage. After correction of position and contour, the skin is replaced and secured by surgical sutures. The new cartilage contours are supported with soft cotton padding.

Application of a total turban-type head dressing for five to seven days is necessary to protect both ears, minimize swelling, and limit discomfort. This allows the patient to turn from side to side without undue pressure while sleeping.

Recovery
Potential fluid or blood may collect between the skin and cartilage, resulting in a noticeable change of configuration. The head-dress and padding is designed to avoid this, so it should not be disturbed.

This procedure has no adverse effects on the hearing mechanism or the inner ear structures.

Considerations
The risks involved with otoplasty are few. The most common is residual irregularity in the cartilage. Although normally both ears are different, significant degrees of difference may require a secondary adjustment. Minor adjustments in the ear lobes may also be desirable as a secondary procedure.
