Tummy Tuck
(Abdominoplasty)

Description
Abdominoplasty is performed to remove excess fatty tissue and skin in the mid to lower abdominal region. Repair may include tightening of the abdominal muscles and surgical removal of excess skin folds. Scars from previous surgery such as old Cesarean scars may also be partially or totally eliminated. The muscle wall is returned to pre-pregnancy shape and position. Chiseled rectus muscles can be simulated. Scars can be hidden under a bikini.

Procedure
The basic abdominoplasty procedure involves raising the abdominal skin and fatty tissue, stretching it downward, and removing the excess with the suture closure located at the "bikini line". Muscular supportive structures are repaired at the same time.

Repositioning of the navel is frequently required. This is similar to repositioning the nipple in breast reconstruction. A sad belly button becomes a very youthful vertical oval or heart shape.

Considerations
Generally, abdominoplasty carries the same risks as any other major surgical operation. But since the patient is in good health beforehand, the risks are significantly lessened.

Soft tissue loss, secondary infection and collection of fluid under the skin are always possible, but can be treated successfully. Deformity of the navel is also a potential risk, occurring in approximately five percent of cases, if it contracts too much. Deep vein clots in the legs are prevented by hourly lower leg exercises and early ambulation. Don't camp out in bed after the first 24 hours.
