Breast Reduction Surgery
(Reduction Mammoplasty)

After
Description
Overly large and pendulous breasts are associated with varying degrees of sagging and gradual displacement of the nipple. Mammoplasty surgically reduces the volume of the breasts and restores them to the normal contour with elevation of the nipple.

Procedure
There are many different procedures that can successfully reduce breast size. Functional and aesthetic considerations figure in the selection of a specific procedure. This will be discussed in the consultation.

The location of the incisions depends on the type of procedure selected. Soft tissue and excess skin is removed, the contour is restored (including raising the nipple) and the incisions closed, usually without leaving stitch marks.

Considerations
Local risks are associated with partial loss of skin, fat, gland or nipple, and are largely the result of compromised blood circulation. The procedure involves shifting, partial excision and relocation which partially separates tissues from their normal blood supply.

Extreme reductions in volume, requiring a drastic change in position, may exceed the tissue's natural limits. When this occurs, the tissues are replaced by scar tissue. A small touch-up may therefore be necessary, at no charge.

When the nipple requires the greatest displacement, a free graft is necessary. Although minor loss may take place, the possibility of complete loss is quite remote.

Partial or complete loss of nipple sensitivity may occur, depending on the surgical procedure selected. While this is a significant consideration, it should be recognized that overly large pendulous breasts are normally less sensitive to begin with.

Breast feeding after most reduction procedures is unlikely.
